San Sebastián is placed in the Basque Country Region (in Spain). There are three main provinces: Guipúzkoa, Áraba and Bizkaia. San Sebastián is found in Guipúzkoa, and in Basque, San Sebastián is written as Donosti.
The main language is Spanish, but there are around 1 million of Basque speakers in the Basque Country (around 37% of the population). However, for some public positions, such as being a Teacher, a Nurse or a Doctor, you need to speak both Spanish and Basque at a C1 level.
In order to support people, the Government of the Basque Country offers fully funded Basque courses.
How does it work? You pay your fees, BUT, if you pass the final exam, you will get your fees reimboursed.
These kind of Basque Language Schools are known as Euskaltegi (check a list of Euskaltegis here).
Another option is to join the Official Language Center (click here), where you can learn Spanish, Basque, German, English and many others!
Whait… but… WHY EUSKALTEGI?
- Tegi : place
- Eusk: euksera (Basque language)
